THE ROAD WE’RE ON

“We call this a Cajun rocker, because all of the really fast two-steps lock into this groove. It’s got a Cajun/honky-tonk feel with a walking bass. Real simple, just two chords -- but at the same time I did something on this one I’ve never done before: The vocal is in the key of C, and the instrumental section is in the key of G. I learned this from accordion players in Cajun bands: They’ll play a C accordion in the key of C for waltzes, and in G for the two-steps to get the minor seventh. I think it’s the jump between the two keys that gives this tune a lift.“
