News from the road and the studio

Sonny joined John Hiatt and The Goners for a two-week West Coast run in August with special guest Jimmy Vaughan. "He’s one of my favorite pure blues guitar heroes," Sonny says. "He’s got more soul in one note that most of us have in too many." Hiatt and The Goners plan more touring in November leading up to sessions in Nashville for a new album.

From Sept. 3-8, Sonny took part in recording sessions in Switzerland for an upcoming live album by well-known Swiss artist Hank Schizzoe.

On Monday, Oct. 14 (Columbus Day), Sonny and other special guests will join Little Feat to perform the "Waiting for Columbus" album live in its entirety. That show takes place at Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where tracks for the original disc were recorded back in 1977. On a related note, Sonny can be heard guesting with the band on a version of "Let It Roll" included on the recently released Little Feat two-disc live compilation "Raw Tomatoes Vol. 1."

And here’s a show just about everyone should be able to witness. The Acadiana Arts Council’s Louisiana Crossroads concert series will open with a pair of rare duo performances in Lafayette and New Iberia featuring Sonny and Dave Ranson at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 16 and 17. The Wednesday night gig will be broadcast live on KRVS 88.7 FM Lafayette and its Web site, www.krvs.org. Tickets are available by calling (337) 233-7060. The shows will take place in the Vermilionville Performance Center and The Sliman Theater for Performing Arts in New Iberia. Other upcoming fall dates will feature longtime collaborator and fellow Goner Kenneth Blevins on drums. Check our Tour Dates section for more.

On the recording front, Sonny is hard at work finishing up his new blues-inspired album due out at the end of January, 2003. The working title comes from the cut "The Road We’re On," and some of the tracks may be familiar to recent audiences. "We’ve been playing a lot of these songs throughout the spring and summer, including ‘All About You,’ ‘A World Away’ and ‘Hell at Home,’" Sonny reports. Stay tuned to SlideLines for more on that project.

We’ve got a new mp3 posted in the Lagniappe section. Here are Sonny’s thoughts on this rare duo version of "Common Law Love" recorded with Steve Conn on accordion and harmony vocals live at KBCO FM:

"I was in Boulder doing E-Town when Steve was the musical director. He was featured on the original ‘Outward Bound’ album version, so we thought it’d be a good idea to record a live duo version for KBCO’s Studio C Sessions. This is in E tuning, and it’s a treat to hear the accordion in this key. Most Cajun and zydeco songs are in G and C. We don’t hear an accordion in E very often down here in Louisiana. This is basically a 1-4-5 song. The slide is at the 12th fret, and you’re able to fret behind it to get the main figure. You’re hearing all six strings so it’s a bigger sound."

Hope you dig it. Thanks again for your support, and please spread the word about SonnyLandreth.com and SlideLines.
