On the cover of ‘Guitar Player!’

The words “Supreme Slide Master” float above the name, and the all-cap headline reads “Sonny Landreth joins forces with Clapton, Knopfler, Eric Johnson, Robben Ford & Vince Gill.”

Art Thompson’s story spans 15 pages of the October 2008 issue of the venerable magazine, and Jude Gold’s “Sonny’s Slide Secrets” lessons add another six pages to the tally. There’s even a sidebar including praise from the aforementioned six-stringers, who all offer insight into the instruments and gear they used to lay down their tracks for “From the Reach,” Sonny’s latest release.

And, as we mentioned last time, all this comes on the heels of Sonny topping the magazine’s reader poll for Best Slide Guitarist honors.

“Unbelievable” is the first word out of Sonny’s mouth. “As a guitar geek who’s been reading ‘GP’ since day one, it’s the ultimate double thrill. They’ve always set the bar for excellence as the best magazine for guitarists everywhere, and I’m going to be high on this for a long time to come.”

Here are two excerpts from the lead-in to the lengthy interview with Sonny:

“Driven by Landreth’s otherworldly bottleneck playing, the new album nails all points on the coolness curve with its inspired songwriting, lyrical depth, and abundance of great guitar from this all-star cast. It’s no secret that Landreth has elevated the state of rock guitar via his amazing slide technique, which involves fingering notes and generating harmonics on the ‘left side of the glass.’”

“Landreth’s appearance on this month’s cover is a long-due testament to the immense impact that he has had on the guitar scene, and the Master Class that accompanies this story further explores the inner workings of a sound and style that still remain unique to Sonny L.”

Slide Shows

Our Tour Dates section always has the latest info on the road ahead.

Looking back a bit, Sonny recently joined fellow slide maestro David Lindley for a special show that was part of the opening reception for “The Magic & Mystery of Slide Guitar,” an exhibit running through March at The Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, Calif.
